It's
a game of perseverance. I was on hold recently for 45 minutes, and I just
about have their automated messages memorized.

I heard the Project Manager behind Ohio Means Jobs speak recently to a job
search group in the Cincinnati area, and he mentioned that SCOTI was useful
for its time, but now they want people to use www.OhioMeansJobs.com

When you file for unemployment, they will try to match you with any
positions. This registration is for their internal case management. You will
still need to register yourself with OhioMeansJob.com as an external user.
It sounds like that's what you may have already done.

I have no affiliation with these websites but am just a messenger
communicating what I know and have heard. Calling 877-644-6562 got me to a phone menu with no SCOTI. Eventually getting a person (10 minute wait, not terrible), told me I was already registered. YAY. (over a year ago, this worked, kinda). I asked, how do I use SCOTI now ? www.scoti.ohio.gov - I should have tried it before hanging up - it don't work. www.ohiomeansjobs.com does work. Many people have real passion, love and colour in their lives anyway, but still need a job, which might not involve all the passion, enthusiasm and fulfillment desired in a wider sense. The fact that some guy here is picking up his guitar and following his dream is slightly annoying and not representative of the situation or options facing the vast majority of job seekers out here IMO.

The implication that those of us with less harebrained approach to work are somehow less worthy seems to me unhelpful. The problem for some of us (at least for myself) in this context is that I need to get a job to support life, I do what I say and have integrity, have made perfectly adequate compromise in the past and have references to prove it, but cannot generate the sort of "passion" and "zeal" you refer to for any practical possibility as it stands.

What about something which says to employers "forget all these passionate, zealous rock-band-chasing loonies, a realistic appreciation at the outset of the compromise to be made is a good basis for a valuable long-term arrangement"

Anyway, of all the musical ambitions, pursuit of U2 is pretty lame to me - what about the cutting edge? what about roots and passion in music, not just turgid & bloated soft rockers? bah humbug...

Re: Local Job Search Focus Groups

I'm not sure. If it is to little then I go into why I would like to take this position but I will need to get more and here are the reasons why. For all the times I had to this, a whole 1. I selected 1 for English, listen to a few long messages with pauses in between and finally a menu where I selected option 3 (includes "if you are required to register for employment services"). I while later, I talked to a representative, explain the letter I received and that I called this number to register with SCOTI. She did this on the spot, asking a few questions similar to those when you register for unemployment. As the correction says above: the Ohio's SCOTI is not called Ohio Means Jobs at http://ohiomeansjobs.com. It seems to be a great resource well worth checking out.

Re: Ohio SCOTI System and Indeed Salary Search

I just now called and I got the usual line to file claims and nothing about SCOTI. The Ohio unemployment system here is nothing but a big, bloated, bureaucratic mess. They may switch dates on your eligibility application, take forever to respond if they respond at all. The questions you answer to file claims are THE SAME QUESTIONS I WAS ANSWERING IN THE 1970's!!!! THIS IS 2010, PEOPLE!!! I HATE having to deal with this antiquated, depresson-era nonsense.

Re: What is unemployment teaching you?

I worked for a software company for 10 years. I also had a "side" business that always ended up being placed on the back burner because there was always an "emergency" task that was required for my job. About three years into the "Regular job" I inquired into the possibility of working or buying some ownership of the company so when the owner decided to sell and retire I would not be left holding an empty bag of chips. I was told that would not happen. Well it did.
While being unemployed helps you to remember what is important such as family and health ... I think the best lesson I got is to follow your gut instincts all the time. Don't depend on anyone. any company or government for that matter to provide for you. When it comes down to it we are all responsible for our own well being and future.
Thanks for the post

Re: What is unemployment teaching you?

I'm really thrilled that you took this on board, Dan :) I'll post some of my thoughts soon.
